The
SEPECAT Jaguar was the world's first
military aircraft developed by two
countries. Both France and the UK were
in need of an advanced jet trainer.
Britain needed a supersonic, and the
French wanted a subsonic trainer that
was cheap to build.
The RAF
received a total of 203 Jaguars, 165 GR1
(Jaguar S) single seaters, and 38 two
seat's T.2's (Jaguar B). The GR1's have
been upgraded to the current GR1.A with
Adour Mk 104s, they feature an advanced
nav/attack system and laser rangefinder
in a chisel shaped nose. Currently
Britain is upgrading it's Jaguars to
GR.3 (and T.4) standard with TIALD pod
and ASRAAM compatibility, a helmet
mounted sight, improved ECM, a towed
decoy system, new LCD screen in the
cockpit and up to 25% more powerful
Adour Mk 106 turbofans.
France
received 160 single seaters (Jaguar As)
and 40 trainers (Jaguar Es). French
Jaguars had a less advanced nav/attack
system and twin DEFA cannons. Half were
delivered with an under nose laser
rangefinder and 30 can carry the ATLIS
laser designator pod for the AS.30L
laser guided missile.
The
export Jaguar has been sold to 4 other
countries, it was sold and built by BAe
and based on the GR.1. India has bought
the most export Jaguars, and is still
building them under license. Some have
an Agave radar and can fire Sea Eagle
anti ship missiles (to be upgraded with
the Elta EL/M-2032 radar). India's
latest batch of 17 two seaters
(delivered from 2001) have a DARIN nav/attack
system and will be used for night
attack. |
